It is by far my favorite new mechanic of the game. Jumping off of a giant cliff and landing on the back of a giant flying monster beneath you while stabbing and simultaneously trying to hold on is exhilarating. The new mount mechanic sounds simple but it adds a whole new layer of fun, especially when combined with a more intuitive and easier way to climb ledges and cliffs. The insect glaive being the most fun addition (in my opinion) as it allows you to vault and potentially mount monsters with a new mechanic that I think was inspired by Capcom's other franchise Dragon's Dogma. And in MH4U, they've added two more brand new weapon styles the insect glaive and the charge blade, adding even more diversity to the line-up. It makes you feel that much more unique when you master a single weapon style. A great sword user's experience in MH for example will be greatly different from that of a bowgun user, and so forth. What's great about MH is that every weapon is so different and unique in playstyle, that it completely changes the way you play the game. And boy are there weapons to choose from. And it makes you want to get better at the weapon you choose. Much like the Dark Souls franchise, every swing, hit, and miss is felt. The combat is mostly the same methodical weighted combat that has existed over each other version of the series, which is good. No longer are you bombarded by jargon and features you don't understand all at once. You are only taught what you need to know at any point in the game. The tutorial has been streamlined and doesn't get in the way of veterans while also providing a deep and superbly paced learning curve for newbies. Whether you're a long time fan or someone looking to get into the series, MH4U is the pinnacle of the MH series. I think that streak has ended with Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, however. I'm one of those guys who loves the idea of Monster Hunter and gets hyped up by my friends to play, only to play for a few hours before leaving it to gather dust on my shelf. One iteration after another I'm blown away by how Capcom can make a mostly unchanged formula feel fresh.

And its on a handheld! I couldn't recommend this title more … Expand Its, in my honest opinion, amongst the greatest games ever made. It may be overwhelming, but if you get over that hump, you'll be hooked. Eventually, you'll have armor and weapons that are suited for certain situations and certain monster encounters. You can buff your character with skills that are attached to armor and weapons and you can also attach skills to them with things called decorations. When playing, you're going to be gathering items, farming monsters for parts to craft armor and weapons, and upgrading said armor and weapons all so you can beat the next monster threat. Way easier than Freedom Unite at first which is a major plus.

First off, this game is so great for newcomers. I decided to get MH4U for the 3ds and so far have not regretted it one bit. I played it for about 10 hours and realized I needed the best version of monster hunter.

I played Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for the psp very recently and loved it even if it was relentless to newcomers. The weapons, armor, combat, graphics, landscapes and of course the MONSTERS are just utterly brilliant. Everything about this game is just wonderful. Im 10 months late to the wonderful world of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate and wish i would've gave it a shot back in February.
